Rain forests are home to half the animal and plant species on earth, yet cover
less than eight percent of the earth's surface. These forests also provide us
with an abundance of foods, medicines, fuels, and other useful products
including 40% of the earth's oxygen, making them one of our most valuable
natural resources.
Scientists don't know exactly how many species of plants and animals live in the
world's rain forests but it is estimated in the millions with new species being
discovered each year. Sadly, the rain forests are being destroyed at an
alarming rate. Some scientists believe that an area of rain forest equal in
size to the state of Delaware is cleared away every month.
The future of the earth's rain forests depends on us. Fortunately, many
governments and citizens around the world are trying to stop the destruction by
